Senate Democrat: We can 'slow' Barrett's confirmation but 'can't stop' it.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Sunday that Democrats will be able to “slow” Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation process but “can’t stop” it.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Durbin confirmed an ABC News report that Democrats are without a “silver bullet” for stopping Barrett’s confirmation before the Nov. 3 election.

“That’s true,” Durbin told host George Stephanopoulos.

President Donald Trump formally nominated Barrett on Saturday to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, moving one step closer to establishing a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

Durbin said the timing and even the outcome of the confirmation process could change if at least four GOP senators speak out against holding it ahead of Election Day. So far, Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine are the only Republicans who have done so.

Democratic strategists ― including, Adam Jentleson, who served as deputy chief of staff for former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) ― have outlined ways they believe Democrats could derail Barrett’s confirmation. 

But Durbin said Sunday that such plans could only temporarily stall the process.*

HOW MANY LAWSUITS DID THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY FILE CLAIMING THAT SENATOR MCCONNELLS REFUSAL TO GIVE MERRICK GARLAND, PRESIDENT OBAMAS CHOICE FOR THE SUPREME COURT, A MANDATED PUBLIC HEARING BEFORE THE U.S. SENATE WAS UNCONSTITUTIONAL?

IT WAS MORE IMPORTANT TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY TO STOP AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE FOR EVERY AMERICAN, THAN IT WAS FOR THE DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE TO PRESERVE THE CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEE THAT THE PRESIDENTS NOMINEE HAS TO BE GIVEN A HEARING AND A VOTE BEFORE THE SENATE.

3 Elections. One Baby. And a Pandemic. PAT RYAN.

Hello David, I can't believe we're a week away from what is without a doubt the most consequential election of our lifetimes. It feels like just yesterday, in the wake of the 2016 elections, that I felt called to step into the arena to help rebuild our politics and work towards a more progressive future. Over the last few years, I've been humbled and honored to meet and receive support from so many great people. More than anything, I just want to thank you for supporting me and so many other candidates that have been part of this wave of people working inch by inch from the ground level to restore our democracy and build the Democratic party. Personally, these last few years have been a wild - but amazing - ride! Starting with a congressional campaign where I was part of ultimately flipping a priority Red-to-Blue district, driving record voter turnout, and advocating for bold changes on pressing issues from ending gun violence to enacting universal healthcare.

Then having this incredible opportunity to serve the place where I grew up as Ulster County Executive.

Especially during this last year, having the chance to not only step up and lead our coordinated response to the COVID-19 crisis, but to implement a Green New Deal for Ulster County, build a more equitable economy, tackle the opioid epidemic, implement and push for needed justice reforms and more —that's exactly why I sought public office in the first place.     So as we look ahead to this critical election - a watershed moment for our country - let’s also take a brief moment to look back and be proud of what we've accomplished. We’ve mobilized an unprecedented wave of engagement and activism, inspired people across the country to run for office at every level, and fought hard for important policy changes and reforms. Seeing how all of us have come together and worked tirelessly over the last four years, I am confident that there will be more progress and opportunity to celebrate in the coming weeks.    As I reflect back, I also recognize that none of this would have been possible without you believing in and supporting me. Thank you for having my back since day one and helping put me in a position to once again be “of service” at such a critical moment. We have much more hard work ahead, but with your continued support I know we can and will emerge from this moment of darkness back into the light.    I look forward to connecting again soon, and in the meantime I hope you and your loved ones remain healthy and safe.    Best,

P.S. The other big thing that's kept Rebecca and I busy over the last year is having our first child, Theo, which has been a humbling reminder of why the work that each of us is doing to build a better future for his generation is so urgent and important.

But Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called Monday’s vote “one of the darkest days” in the history of the 231 years of the Senate, and said Republicans will regret their power grab in the long haul.

“I want to be very clear with my Republican colleagues: You may win this vote, and Amy Coney Barrett may become the next associate justice of the Supreme Court, but you will never, never get your credibility back,” Schumer said. “The next time the American people give Democrats a majority in this chamber, you will have forfeited the right to tell us how to run that majority.”

CHUCK, YOU ARE A CORRUPT JOKE, AS IS EVERY SINGLE DEMOCRAT INCUMBENT IN THE U.S. SENATE. YOU SOLD OUT PRESIDENT OBAMA, HILLARY CLINTON, AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. NOW WE HAVE A SUPREME COURT WITH THREE JUSTICES WHO WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED BY A COMPETENT AND HONEST PRESIDENT. 

THE REFUSAL OF THE DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE TO CONTEST THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL AND SENATE RETURNS, (WHICH COST THE DEMOCRATS THE WHITE HOUSE AND CONTROL OF THE SENATE), WAS NOTHING SHORT OF CRIMINAL. I HAVE JUST PUBLISHED U.S. SENATE RESULTS FROM 2008- 2018, TO COMPLEMENT THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS. AMERICANS CAN SEE THE TYPE OF VOTER RETURNS THAT WERE NEVER QUESTIONED OR DEBATED, BUT THAT YOU AND YOUR FLUNKIES ACCEPTED WITHOUT A WORD.

IT IS AMAZING THAT IN 2016 AND 2018 DONALD TRUMP ACCUSED THE DEMOCRATS OF ELECTION FRAUD WITHOUT ANY EVIDENCE, AND THE ACCUSATIONS WERE PROVEN TO BE GROUNDLESS. YET, WITH EXTENSIVE EVIDENCE OF FRAUD BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND RUSSIA IN THE 2016 ELECTION, THE DEMOCRATS IN THE U.S. SENATE DID NOTHING. 

YOU MUST FEEL PROUD. WHAT WAS WORTH BETRAYING YOUR COUNTRY?

I WANT TO MAKE CLEAR THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM OF NANCY PELOSI OR ANY OF THE DEM. HOUSE MEMBERS. THEY SHOWED THEIR COURAGE DURING THE TRUMP IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS, HANDLING THE PRESSURE VERY WELL, AND INTRODUCING HONEST AND CAPABLE WITNESSES TO SHOW THE DEPTHS OF TRUMPS DISHONESTY.
